Writing Question
Description
For this assignment, conduct a thorough analysis of my primary source, The Street Art Mural – “The Dreamers” by Unknown Artist, that draws from the development of your evolving thesis. Practice our method of pattern recognition and avoid accounting for all features in the source. This is not an exercise in cataloging what’s present. You should instead begin with one feature (which may be enough to sustain your entire analysis), though you may end up exploring a few. The key is to consider any feature you select in relation to 1) the intention of the source and 2) any other feature you discuss. Here are a few more guidelines for this important, foundational work.
- Simply identifying a feature and pointing out where it occurs isn’t enough. Instead, ask these two questions as you write: 1) why does this feature matter and 2) SO WHAT?
- The 5-paragraph essay will attempt to seduce you into its waiting arms. You will be tempted to compose a thesis like this: “My primary source uses logos, pathos, and ethos to appeal to its intended audience.” Resist. Again, see the features in relation to one another, not as items in a list. More importantly, your claim should address how the source uses certain types of appeals strategically to advance a specific claim that might challenge the audience in light of certain contexts, attitudes, or existing views.
- Select representative evidence and incorporate any quotations smoothly into your own sentence, citing appropriately. Rather than simply using quotations as proof, use them to analyze.
- Think carefully about structure, and remember that it’s okay to begin with a somewhat smaller claim, then build toward something larger. Remember that each paragraph will complicate the one that precedes it, so the order should be deliberate and build gradually toward synthesis.
