Study Questions for Interview Papers
Your task for this paper is to locate and interview a manager, then write a paper based on what you learn. It’s not necessary for the manager to be a family member; instead, it could be you. It isn’t necessary for it to be your own manager.
Create a broad question based on a textbook topic that interests you (for example, How can a manager best keep employees motivated?). Prepare an interview protocol that includes 5-10 smaller questions that address the larger theme. Given that the paper is due in the middle of this 7-week course (the due date is listed in the Course Schedule), you may need to read ahead a little to find and learn about a topic that interests you. Skimming the table of contents of a textbook can help you find a topic that interests you.
In an hour-long interview with a manager, use your interview protocol and write a paper based on what you learned during the interview with the manager about your topic of interest. Your paper should be between 5 and 6 pages long (1-inch margins, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font). You may use any other formatting you want as long as it meets these requirements.
(1) Begin your paper by introducing and briefly describing the manager you interviewed.
(2) Describe the broad interview question you came up with.
(3) Compare and contrast what you learned in the interview with what you learned in the course/textbook. Make clear references to course concepts.
(4) The manager you’re interviewing will almost certainly bring up issues that they face on a regular basis. Consider those issues and describe in your paper how, as a management consultant, you might use the course material to suggest potential solutions.
(5) Include your 5- to 10-question interview protocol, as well as the manager’s contact information, in a single Appendix at the end of the paper. Your page limit is not affected by the Appendix. The Appendix does not require any special formatting; please stick to the font size, spacing, and margins listed above. Simply write the word “Appendix” in the top left corner of the page.
Do not repeat your 5-10 interview questions in the body of the paper; it should not read like a Q&A. If you need to provide context by referencing an interview question, number your interview questions in your Appendix and then reference the question number in your paper’s text.
You can simply say “In the textbook, we learn that…” or “Williams says that…” when referencing concepts from the textbook. (Williams wrote the textbook.) There are no citations required for the textbook.
A bibliography (references section) is not required because you only need to relate your interview content to the textbook content. If you wish to refer to outside sources (which is not required), please cite them in the text and include a bibliography at the end of your paper [citations and bibliography in the style/format of your choice (e.g., APA, MLA)]. The page limit does not apply to this bibliography.
A paper with a high grade will:
(1) Ask a broad question inspired by the textbook material (e.g., How can a manager inspire high levels of productivity among subordinates?). This is the central theme of the interview.
(2) Include well-crafted interview questions that effectively address the larger issue. Questions that are well-designed are concise, easy to understand, and focus on a single issue at a time. “What are the biggest hindrances to your subordinates’ productivity?” “In your experience, what are the biggest hindrances to your subordinates’ productivity?” “What are the incentives you use if any to increase productivity among subordinates?” and “What are the incentives you use if any to increase productivity among subordinates?”
(3) Make explicit connections between the course material and the manager’s responses. Is the manager’s response consistent with what you’ve learned in this course, or does it contradict what you’ve learned? If it’s the latter, what makes you think that? Please be as specific as possible. Name the textbook concepts/constructs to which the manager’s responses are being compared. So, returning to the example I’ve been using, you could compare the manager’s responses to the textbook chapter on motivation’s concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards.
(4) Make suggestions for problems that the manager being interviewed discloses, if applicable, using course concepts. This may not be applicable if the manager does not reveal any difficulties when responding to your questions. But I believe they will. I don’t expect you to give these suggestions to the manager directly (though you are free to do so! ), but rather to include them in your paper. Returning to the example I’ve been using, this could look like this: “Melissa stated that extrinsic rewards, such as commission, have had limited success in maintaining productivity. Based on what I’ve learned in this course, I believe she’ll be more successful if she learns what her employees find intrinsically rewarding in their work and restructures their work to include more intrinsic rewards where possible.”
(5) Be free of grammatical and spelling errors.
