LAB REPORT #3 (Shaping)
The Basics: Thus far in the semester students have had the opportunity to conceptualize and design an experiment (Lab Report #1), as well as the opportunity to conduct a simple experiment using virtual software under controlled conditions (Lab Report #2). For this assignment (Lab Report #3), students will have an opportunity to conduct an experiment in their home or convenient location with an adult human. If a student is unable to find an adult to serve as the participant for this lab, they should reach out to the instructor immediately to discuss arrangements.
Topic Background: Shaping is used to develop a target behavior that a person does not currently exhibit. Shaping is defined as the differential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target behavior until the person exhibits the target behavior. By approximation, we mean any behavior that resembles the desired behavior or takes the person closer to that behavior.
Assignment Instructions: For this assignment, each student should do the following:
Select a terminal behavior to be shaped. The behavior should be (a) something discrete (simple) an individual is capable of doing but does not readily do in the environment selected, and (b) something that can be easily identified by a third-party observer. Examples could include, picking-up a particular object, moving to a specific location in the environment, turning off/on a switch, sitting in a chair, or moving a body part in a particular way (e.g., arm circles, waving, etc.).
Generate some ideas regarding an initial behavior and at least three (3) successive approximations to the terminal behavior you have selected. Note, the behaviors you select might change as a product of what your participant does during the experiment. That is okay, but it is a smart idea to have a list of the types of initial behavior and approximations for which you will be watching.
Select a location that you can control. The idea is to find a space where you and the participant can be alone and undisturbed during the experiment.
Set-up the environment in which you will conduct the experiment before the participant arrives. Make sure you have clear boundaries of where the participant can (not) go and place several distractor objects around the room so the terminal behavior is not clearly detected based on the environment alone (e.g., if the goal is to get the individual to sit somewhere specific, make sure to have several options for seating available; if the goal is to get the individual to pick-up a specific object, make sure to have several objects around the room; etc.).
Prior to beginning the experiment, obtain informed consent by doing the following:
Start filming (with the participant in the camera’s view)
Read the following to the participant and wait for oral consent: “I’d like to invite you to play a version of the ‘hot and cold’ game. I am going to try and use shaping to get you to engage in a particular behavior without telling you what that behavior is. Would you like to participate?”
After informed consent, read the following instructions: “Okay. It’s time to start. When I say go, you should start moving about this space and interacting with any of the objects that are present. Please do not leave this area. Remember, when you do something close to the behavior I am looking for, I’m going to say “hot” to let you know you are on the right track. When you do something that is not close to the behavior I am looking for, I’m not going to say anything. When you engage in the target behavior I’m looking for, I’ll say ‘you win!’ to let you know the experiment is over. Do you have any questions before we get started?”
Address any questions the participant has but make sure to not tell them what the terminal behavior is.
Run the experiment. During the experiment, make sure to do the following:
Pay close attention to the participant’s behavior.
Each time the participant engages in a closer approximation to the terminal behavior, deliver a conditioned reinforcer (i.e., say “Hot!”).
Make sure to only reinforce approximations that are successively closer to the terminal behavior. Do not reinforce previous approximations or behavior that is not close to the terminal behavior you are looking for.
For an example of how this experiment might look, see this example from a previous student who has offered to share their work with you: https://youtu.be/IFuAEXVznD0
Once you have completed your experiment, review the video, and create an APA-style lab report that includes a (1) title page, (2) method section, and (c) abbreviated results section. Please use the template provided at the end of this document.
Once completed, submit the video of your experiment along with Lab Report #3 on Blackboard under “Lab Report #3 (Shaping).” Please make sure to save the report file as a .docx, .doc. or .pdf file format. Failure to submit the video record of your experiment will result in a zero (0) for this assignment.

TITLE OF LAB REPORT #3
Your Name
University of Alaska Anchorage
Method
Participants and Setting
Describe the participant and setting here.
Materials
Describe the materials you used in your experiment.
Dependent Variable
Terminal behavior. Identify and operationally define the terminal behavior you selected to be shaped during this experiment.
Approximations to terminal behavior. Review the video of your experiment and identify and operationally define the initial behavior and at least three (3) of the successive approximations you reinforced, and provide a brief rationale for why this initial behavior and these approximations were selected.
Procedure
This is where you are going to describe your shaping procedure. Make sure to (a) define reinforcement, (b) define extinction, and (c) clearly indicate how you used differential reinforcement (reinforcement + extinction) to achieve the terminal behavior.
Results
In your results section for this Lab Report, you should include the following information:
Was the terminal behavior successfully shaped? If not, why do you think you were not able to successfully shape the behavior?
How many approximations did you have to reinforce to reach the terminal behavior?
What side-effects of extinction did you observe during the shaping process (e.g., frustration, repeated questions, etc.)?
