A successful paper will demonstrate a sustained consideration of the particular photographic images on which it focuses, and a clear understanding of the historical, artistic, social, and material contexts that formed their conception and creation. -Develop an argument about the works you′ve selected using your own formal analysis in combination with secondary research about the particular photographs, the artist(s) who made them, and their art historical circumstances. Your argument must be supported by both strong, thoughtful formal analysis and primary and/or secondary literature on photography, properly cited in the text. -You may choose works by photographers who were contemporaries, or who were separated by more than a century; photographers from the same or different nations or cultures; photographers who were aware of one another or who were not. But whatever you choose, I encourage you to find some documented concrete connection between them in addition to any formal relationship, whether it be historical, geographical, thematic, or personal/biographical. – Your paper should cite at least eight sources that do not appear on the syllabus for this course. When using web-based sources, give some consideration to whether the source is trustworthy (those found using the library databases linked above, as well as certain more public-oriented sites representing serious scholarship such as metmuseum.org are excellent resources; Wikipedia is not). – Please also include an appendix containing reproductiolryns of each of your key photographs.
