MGT422 Decision-Making and Leadership Styles
Assignment of a Case
Sprint has been rumored to be interested in acquiring T-Mobile since 2013. (In the United States, they are the third and fourth largest mobile phone carriers.) Masayoshi Son, the chairman of Japanese corporation SoftBank, which owns Sprint, is driving this initiative. Mr. Son is a daring entrepreneur who is known for his willingness to take risks and drive to be a worldwide telecommunications leader. If the merger is approved, it will combine the third and fourth largest mobile phone carriers in the United States.
Recently, it has appeared that the merger will not take place. However, the fact that this merger has been speculated for quite some time implies it was a difficult decision for Masayoshi Son to make. A large-scale merger like this has a lot of advantages, including the ability for a merged Sprint/T-Mobile to compete with industry heavyweights AT&T and Verizon. Mergers, on the other hand, are usually dangerous and necessitate a large amount of debt to finance, not to mention navigating several regulatory barriers.
Review the background materials on the Vroom-Yetton decision-making style model for this task. This entails answering seven decision-related questions and analyzing the findings to establish your decision-making style. Make sure you understand the concept, including the seven questions and path map you’ll use to figure out your chosen leadership style. You can pick between several levels of autocratic, consultative, or group decision-making styles using the Vroom-Yetton paradigm.
After you’ve gone over the required background resources, such as Vroom (1976) and Rigolosi (2005), do some study on Sprint’s choice to buy T-Mobile and consider what kind of replies you’d give to the seven questions in the Vroom-Yetton model. To get you started, here are some articles about the rumored Sprint/T-Mobile merger:
D. Gelles and M. J. De La Merced (2014, Jun 05). T-Mobile and Sprint are considering merging. [ProQuest] New York Times
D. Yao (2014). According to Moody’s, the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile will result in negative free cash flow until at least 2018. [ProQuest] SNL Kagan Media & Communications Report
M. De La Merced, M. De La Merced, M. De La Merce (2014, Aug 07). Sprint’s effort to buy T-Mobile has failed. [ProQuest] International New York Times
Write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following problems once you’ve finished your study on the Vroom-Yetton model and the merger:
1. Pretend you’re Masayoshi Son, and you’re trying to figure out which decision-making style to employ. Go over the Vroom-Yetton model’s seven questions and give your answers depending on what you believe are the most important factors to consider when deciding whether or not to buy T-Mobile. Explain your reasoning for each response.
2. Look at the diagram in the Vroom-Yetton model and see what kind of decision-making style Masayoshi Son should have based on your responses to the seven questions from Question 1. Use the diagram on page 118 of Rigolosi (Figure 6.2). (2005). Is this response surprising to you? Is this a decision-making method that you would endorse based on your own research?
3. End your work with a discussion of your personal thoughts on the Vroom-Yetton model’s utility in determining your decision-making style. Do you think business executives should be trained in this model? Is there any way you think the model could be made better? Give an explanation for your decision.
Expectations for the Assignment: Carefully read the assignment instructions and complete all of the steps outlined therein.
Keep your attention on the specific assignment questions; don’t wander off on tangents or spend too much time describing broad background information.
Remember to cite readings from the background materials page in your paper. As far as information goes, stick to the needed background readings.
