Communicating Science in Lay Terms. Biologists must contextualize their work for

scientific and non-scientific audiences alike. We're all in this together, as evidenced

in part by the fact that most research in the biological sciences is funded using public

tax dollars. With that in mind, the objective here is to transform your scientific

summary into a version suitable for a lay audience. So, once again summarize the

most important elements of (a) study design, (b) main findings, and (c) biological

importance presented in the assigned manuscript using no more than 3 – 4

sentences, but this time for an audience of non-scientists.

Use your own words. Speaking of words, and to be sure they are appropriate for the

intended audience, you will be restricted to a database of the ten hundred most

commonly used words in the English language. Before submitting this assignment,

2. Scientifically Artistic. Last week you were tasked with writing an abstract for the

paper. Now, it's time to transform it. The objective here is to create a graphical

representation of the manuscript (abstract) and write a set of descriptive bullet points

(highlights) for accompanying explanation. In other words, create a single

image/figure/cartoon that summarizes the (a) study design, (b) main findings and (c)

overall significance of the research article and, on the side, write descriptive bullets

(highlights) explaining your image.
