Lecture Discussion
This week you found out that one of the main threats to native biodiversity, in many places, is introduced species that have become opportunistic and invasive. I think you will be surprised to find out that many of the plants and animals you assume are native are actually introduced and are fast on their way to wiping out their native neighbors. I visited Alaska this past summer and I, like most of you I’m sure, assumed that Alaska was a wild frontier pretty much untouched by human hands. Was I wrong…? Look at the sign I spotted in the airport! You may have to zoom in on the picture but you will see that many of the invasive species we worry about in Texas are also a concern in Alaska!
Answer the following questions. Be sure to answer in paragraph form. Your original post should be at least 100 words and your replies are expected to be at least 3 to 5 sentences. Be sure to cite the source of your information.
1) First of all, what does it mean when we say a species is native? Now, do an online search for a current event (an event that has happened within the last 2 weeks) about an invasive species somewhere in the United States. Some good sources are National Geographic, Science Daily and even your local newspaper. Be sure to cite your current event so we know where the event occurred and when. Summarize your article and tell us about the species, why it is detrimental to its current environment and what might be done to decrease the effect of or get rid of the invasive species.
2) Reply to two of your classmates’ posts in a substantive manner.
