Ethical Reasoning and Argumentation on Abortion
Paper details: 1. on “A & B” As was specified in the syllabus from the beginning, everyone is required to submit “A & B” (Abstract & Bibliography) to earn an approval for the essay topic. It can be met by submitting an 1-page plan for the essay, which is comprised of the following 2 item: (1) Abstract: 1-paragraph description of your “intended” argument on a chosen topic along with the “title” of essay (2) Bibliography: list of reference materials The 1-page “A & B” is not assigned any credit points in and of itself; but you should get an approval by submitting it; otherwise, your essay will NOT be considered as “legitimate,” thereby getting no credit from your essay.
The idea is not to limit your freedom of choices but to make sure that your work will not fall into improper terrain, so that your effort will not be in vain. It will be quite liberal enough that as long as you demonstrate “relevancy” of your topic to what we’ve studied, you shall be granted an approval (even if it may be an issue from the areas other than what we discussed in Praxis). Naturally, you could choose to write about the issue that you played the role of discussion leader with, as you may have developed more acute interest in it than otherwise; but it may not be so as well. The key is to choose something that you’ve felt most strongly from what we’ve studied, and to “argue for” your own position by mustering your own forces of ideas and thoughts.
Of course, you should incorporate what we’ve studied in the course; but also, given that no idea is an island totally detached from all the rest, at least some minimal number of references (footnotes) should be part of your essay. Certainly, it is “not” a statement of commitment on the essay topic, as it could evolve or might develop some changes (in which case, you should consult with me immediately); but at least, you should be able to show your instructor what it is that you’re interested enough to write an essay on. Again, it is to your advantage to be confirmed that your essay is on the “correct” path to earn the credit points. 2. on “Essay” ——————————————————————- on the length: The essay should be at least 7-10 pages in its main text, “exclusive” of: (1) the “improved and refined” version of Abstract at the beginning, and (2) the Bibliography at the end. ——————————————————————- on the font: You should use the standard: double-spaced with font of 12 points in normal letter size. ——————————————————————- on Abstract: As far as the Abstract at the beginning is concerned, it should contain the following 3 statements: 1. nature of issue or question you’re addressing 2. your “conclusion” as an answer to the issue 3. your reasons, that is, “premises” for your conclusion You are “strongly recommended” to add to this beginning page for the Abstract what has been referred to as “R & E” throughout the course: Given that the above conclusion and the premises should constitute a full-blown “argument,” you may certainly try to lay it out in a linear or hierarchical “Reconstruction” (and even “Evaluation”), as was studied in Part 4. Ethical Reasoning & Argumentation. This enriched additional feature of Abstract will earn you higher points than otherwise. ——————————————————————- on PDF for file to submit: You may use word processing program to write the essay; but you should all convert it to PDF for the sake of OS-independent compatibility. ——————————————————————- on format: You may write in conformity with “any” standard manual or style, e.g., MLA, Chicago, etc. Surely, I would care contents a lot more than style. In the materials, I put the things you have to talk about in the esslryay regarding abortion. They’ll help.
