The nervous system also relies on diffusion to transmit signals. Neurons communicate through the
diffusion of neurotransmitters across synapses. When an action potential reaches the end of a neuron,
neurotransmitters are released into the synapse, where they diffuse and bind to receptors on the adjacent
neuron. This binding triggers a new action potential, allowing for the transmission of signals throughout
the nervous system.
Diffusion also plays a pivotal role in maintaining osmotic balance in cells. Osmosis, a type of diffusion,
involves the movement of water across semipermeable membranes to balance the concentration of
solutes on either side. Cells need to maintain the right balance of water to ensure their proper functioning. Imbalances in osmotic pressure can lead to cell shrinkage or swelling, potentially causing
damage or dysfunction.
In conclusion, the importance of diffusion in living organisms cannot be overstated. It underpins critical
