An Ethical Dilemma Discussion
Values are our beliefs that drive what we do. An ethical dilemma often occurs when our values come into conflict, and we must choose to follow one value at the expense of another. For example, you may believe in honesty, but you also have a strong sense of obligation to your family to provide them a decent lifestyle. Do you lie in your job interview to get a new job?
Our values are often quite influenced by our culture as well. Have a look at Fons Trompenaars’ talk on navigating conflicts of values between cultures in professional situations:
Consider this scenario:
Jane, a student in our class who has just moved to North Carolina for a better career opportunity and started a job at the hospital working 40+ hours, is struggling to stay afloat with her other classes and getting settled into her new home. She was unable to submit the persuasive memo final draft on time and received an extension, but still is struggling to find the time to compose it. And she is anxious about asking for another extension.
Jane conducts a quick Google search and finds that the persuasive memo assignment for our class has been shared with web companies that offer to compose the memo for a fee, providing the opportunity to submit the purchased document to this class as your own original writing.
She considers it.
Task: Share with your group discussion your responses to these prompts.
- If you were Jane, what are your values that would be in conflict when considering this decision? Briefly explain how each is in conflict as well.
- Who are the parties who have something at stake in this decision? Why? What are the possible benefits and consequences to each party?
- Let’s say Jane buys the paper and is caught by the professor. Explain your opinion on the matter and provide me detailed advice about how to handle it.
