Welcome to Week 1 of your Professional Capstone and Practicum Course. This will be fast paced class, so prepare yourself for the marathon (long run). FYI: all your forms FOR the first week need to be signed by yourself and your preceptor, your time must be approved by your preceptor prior to submission, THE ISP needs to be signed also before submission, if there are issues you need to contact the Tech Support at GCU, please read the instruction before submission of your assignments,

I realize most of you are working however, I would suggest you forget about working too many overtimes hours, try to reserve time for the course assignments and completion. Please review the course materials & feedback prior to each week’s assignments, along with the weekly announcements before you complete your assignments for the week, and, don’t wait to the last minute. You need to utilize the feedback prior to posting your next assignments, and integrate the feedback which will save you time and repeated assignments submission.

- Practice Experience Conference (Pre-Conference). There is a Mandatory Zoom Meeting for week 1 , This is a conference is with me, your preceptor and you, I will the post the available of the times that I am available for you to schedule the Zoom meeting or conference call. Lopes Activity Hours requires early collaboration with your course preceptor while completing the 1 hour per week via Zoom meeting which is included as time spent on the project for your leadership hours. Students must establish a plan for successful completion of 100+ hours.

Please read carefully. The hours must be approved prior to your submission. The requirement of 50+ community hours &, 50+ leadership hour practice hours (the total hours must equal 50+/50+ + 100+ by week 10 of your course completion), and 25 indirect clinical experience hours (which other hours not directly related to completion of your project; attending meeting and conferences) (The form is available in week 10 assignment folder.
- The Individual Success Plan (ISP). The form must be completely fill out and signed your preceptor and you prior to submission. I have attached an example for you to follow in completing this assignment
- Completion of work the associated tasks of the program competencies; The preceptor must sign your initial ISP form prior to submission and at the completion of your course assignments. I will place an example the announcements for you. You will need to coordinate how you are going to accomplish these tasks over the next 10 weeks; you normally will

- spread out the goals and objective over the next 10 weeks, so they can be accomplished over the next 10 weeks, then you must submit a completed ISP in week 1 and again at the end of the course by completing the form with the objectives and goals as outline in the form, have your Preceptor review and sign the form at the beginning and the end of the course.
- Capstone Change Project Topics. If you have a topic and it has been approved by your preceptor, we can discuss this in the pre-conference. Please have this ready for the pre-conference and be able to discuss the PICOT statement also. Once that is accomplished, you just submit your topic with the PICOT statement rather than completing the assignment which requires the three topics
Just remember, this topic must be realistic for your hospital job site, your community service area, clinic, community center, or long-term care facility. Remember, you are proposing an intervention to solve an issue/problem, which must have a measurable outcome, such as 10% increase or decrease in an issue or problem. Once you implement your intervention then you can start collecting data, after you have fully implemented the intervention then you can use the 6 months to 1 year from the intervention to measure the effectiveness of the project.
You will need to find a minimum of 8 peer reviewed references to support your project at a minimum, these references will be used throughout the assignments as supportive references. This would not include .gov, .org or .com or organizational publications, which can be used to support your data, etc. You need to prepare in the future a PICOT statement for the project that you settle on doing. That means, spelling out your PICOT statement;
P- What is the audience, children, adults, seniors, and it works best if it’s a facility, clinic, or hospital, or if you are community health nurse, it could be your area of services, or if you a school teacher it could be your school or local district.
I- What is your plan to solve or correct the?
C- compared to current practice or policy, this must fall within the scope of nursing practice (nurses don’t write orders for medications, form and write policies for doctors, or supervise physicians, etc.)
O- What is your expected outcome? This should be some measurable goal, such as 5% reduction in falls, or 5% reduction in infections, etc.
T- Once the policy or change has been implemented and the staff have been educated on the process, you should begin to collect the outcome data, this could be for 6 months, or up to 1 year from the implementations of the new process.

- Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal . This is to be completed weekly, consisting of a paragraph summary of the activities for each week, and submitted. You will need to combine them into one document during week 10. The completed journal will be required in week 10 with a cover page as one document.
5.Lopes Activity Tracker . The preceptor MUST approve your hours before you post them as complete in the assignment, this is done weekly. I don’t have access to the Lopes Activity Tracker, it is handled by GCU Faculty Tech Support. You will need to contact them when there are issues.
- Questions for Faculty : I will answer any question that you may have by posting them in the folder listed as Questions for the faculty, however read the previous posts first before you post another question, because I may already respond to another student. If it concerns your grade, etc., these questions will be posted in the private forum.
If you read the introduction of the course operational guidelines it will answer many of your questions about the course. I have posted my cell phone, so if it an immediate issue, please text me, and give me 24 hours to respond. Please, don’t duplicate your requests on the cell phone, online classroom, and my email contact.

Preconference availability Schedule: If you have not used Zoom, there is a free download apt on the internet, the file has a tutorial for you to follow for setting up the meetings.
Class, it is your responsibility to make sure your preceptor has set up their “Thunder Time” account to approve your hours” before the preconference. If there are issues, contact Faculty Tech Support at 602-639-7201, I do not arrange the setup for the preceptors. The preconference needs to take place during the first week of class, where a number of the questions about the class can be answered and discussed. This preconference is mandatory and takes place during the first week, so please get with your preceptor and get it scheduled based on my availability. Once I received, your request, I will check on my availability and if still available, I will return the confirmation to you. I then will ask you to send me the zoom link to my email address, so that I may join you at that time. Don’t wait to the last minute, times will fill up quickly. Dr. Thacker
