Incorporating History and Use Genre Conventions
essay is a researched analysis of one or more of the novels. You are required to have at least two outside resources. You may use the articles we have read during this session. However, I encourage you to do some research on your own. Three novels would be the limit for a well-argued comparative analysis. Your topic of inquiry is up to you. Here are some suggestions, themes, and ideas we have discussed in our discussions and short essays:
- A) Slavery: Its effects at the time and the long term effects throughout the 20th
- B) African American Women’s Sexuality: how African American women have discussed and imagined sexuality as well as the cultural stereotypes with which they have had to contend.
- C) Narrative Style/Structure: how the works incorporate history and use genre conventions from memoir, novel, epistolary writing, and sci-fi. How do these narrative style and structure chooses affect the representation of the lives of African American women from the mid-19thto the end of the 20thcentury?
- D) The complex connection of race and gender: how race is experienced differently for women than for men.
You are not required to follow any of these topics and may explore your own ideas. Remember to include in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
