Chapter 9 Photo Atlas of Drug Administration
The nursing instructor observes each of the following situations.
The nursing student is administering eardrops to a 2-year-old child. The student removed the medication from the refrigerator 30 minutes ago to warm it before administration. The student then pulls the pinna of the ear down and back to administer the medication. The student directs the medication along the sides of the ear canal. The student then asks the child’s mother to keep the child side lying for 5 to 10 minutes and to gently massage the tragus of the ear.
The nursing student is administering a sublingual medication. The student directs the patient to briefly chew the medication to break it up and then to place the pieces of the medication under the tongue and let the medication dissolve. The student instructs the patient to swallow the saliva.
The nursing student is administering a subcutaneous injection to an average-sized adult. The student grasps the skinfold between the thumb and forefinger. The student cleanses the site with alcohol by applying the swab at the center of the site and cleansing outward in a circular motion. The student then inserts the needle at a 30-degree angle. The student aspirates and, after seeing no blood, slowly administers the medication. The student withdraws the needle and covers the site with a swab. Finally, the student places the syringe in the sharps container.
