The passing of children is extra-challenging. It takes some of the most special nurses, in my opinion, to care for those patients and families. Healthy coping mechanisms are a must; sharing those with the loved one’s grieving can be a great way to teach them healthy coping mechanisms as well, while demonstrating that you care and showing the situation affects you as the care giver also. Our own attitudes and feelings of death have a direct correlation with a nurse’s comfort level of caring for dying patients (Peters, Can’t, et al, 2013). So self-evaluation, preparation, and coping is essential to maintaining the strength needed to provide high quality patient care.
