Sociology 3306:
)—- Since America became a nation, virtually all of its laws have been based on morality. However, today, legality is taking precedence over morality, especially pertaining to certain civil rights privileges, like marriage. On 10/26/2015, in the case Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in America, citing marriage equality under civil rights of the U.S. Constitution. Regardless of which side of the argument aligns with your beliefs, gay marriage, today in America, is legal. Since gay marriage is legal on the basis of civil rights, what do you think of legalizing polygamous marriage among individuals who “really love” each other, much like the arguments of same-sex couples, who can, now, legally marry in our country?
)—- A man’s wife had his fourth child, and his co-workers were very happy for him. When he was asked, “did she have a boy or a girl?,” his countenance immediately changed, and looking very sad, he replied, “it’s just another girl, Whoopie!! When asked why he was sad, he said, “I would prefer having four boys than four girls.” Sadly, this sentiment is cultural universal, and yes, this person was an American, which leads one to wonder why our society values boys more than girls, and yes, including here in our country where women have the best equal rights in comparison to women in most other countries. So, the question is what would say to this person, if you have the opportunity?
)—- Often, gender inequality compares one sex against another, like boys vs. girls, or men vs. women. Using Symbolic Interaction theory that analyzes social issues at a micro level, why do you think parents, who love their kids, equally, give boys more freedom than girls? (Use the tenets of Symbolic Interaction theory to answer this question)
)—- Globally, there are three major recognized races in the world, Negroid, Mongoloid and Caucasoid. In America, the US Census Bureau recognizes five major races, Blacks, Whites, Hispanic, Asians and Native Americans. Each race treats their women, differently. Generally speaking and in the context of how you think each race treat their women better as whole, which race do you think treats their women with the most respect and why or why not do you think so? Give at least three examples to support your disposition.
)—- In America, the “Me Too Movement” or “#Me Too Movement” has put some prominent and powerful men in prison, men like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. The “Me Too” is a social media movement that encourages victims of sexual assault, women and men, to speak out, publicly, against their sexual perpetrator. The object of the movement is to empower victims of sexual assaults, and to publicly shame the perpetrators, at least or at best, put them in prison for their sexual offense(s). That said, do you think some people are exploiting the victims of these heinous sexual assaults for financial and/or political gain?
