LHE 7014 NCU Role of Preoccupation Programs Research Paper
For this assignment, write a scholarly research paper in which you discuss the role of these programs within the mission of the community college, and variants of this kind of program that is designed to facilitate entry into skilled jobs and career changes. Include the following in your paper:
Consider carefully the role of relevant higher education leadership theories and current professional literature regarding the evolving nature and mission of community colleges.
Within this context, consider both the role of Associates and certificate programs, and discuss the community’s role in identifying new programs needed and priorities for developing.
Finally, address the potential for the college to collaborate with the community to encourage partnership with the larger community for both workforce development and cultural enrichment.
Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages
References: Minimum of 3-5 scholarly resources.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTOR NOTE:
While developing students who can successfully transfer, community colleges have expanded their mission to offer work related programs designed to help students develop the skills needed in the local workforce. Programs, ranging from nursing and health related professions, agriculture, education, office skills, industrial and engineering technology, and computer programming have all found their way on to community college campuses in the form of programs leading to Associates degrees in Applied Sciences. Generally, these terminal programs lead directly to job placement. In addition, community colleges have addressed the needs of others in the community by offering cultural enrichment programs and short programs conferring certificates that can be used to update skills to meet changing needs. In this way, these colleges have found ways to speak directly to the needs of the communities they serve, mounting needed programs quickly and providing a well-trained and credentialed workforce.
Cohen and Brawer (2008) suggest that, while enrollments in preoccupation programs vary from place-to-place and time-to-time, roughly half of all students enrolled in community college are likely to be enrolled in programs that will lead them directly into the workforce upon graduation.
Reflect upon the diverse nature of community college students and the programmatic and career aspirations that they hold. Consider that while some students desire to transfer to a four-year institution upon the completion of their community college studies, others will immediately enter the workforce.
