Emerging Infectious Diseases Zika Virus Exposure Essay
Hi ,
In what ways is EBP applied where you work or where you do clinicals?
Nursing’s utilization of evidence-based practice (EBP) is widely acknowledged as the key to enhancing the standard of care and patient outcomes. Nursing EBP refers to the application of the best, latest, and proven outcomes, whereas nursing research refers to the development of new knowledge. The implementation of EBP in the healthcare setting can be related to nurses’ capacity to learn about, study, and use EBP. The ability to put the research into reality in an environment where factors such as enhancing patient critical care can occur will further demonstrate whether the research is viable (Chein, 2019). I’m currently on the ICU level of Jackson Memorial Hospital. One of the main objectives is to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and implement the elevated head of bed (HOB) strategy throughout the entire unit because the majority of the patients on this floor are on ventilators. The goal is to improve the care for the critical care population by incorporating best practices into patient care regularly, this evidence-based practice is used worldwide (George & Tuite, 2008).
Discuss these findings of a QI initiative or study from either your clinical location/hospital website or another online source.
A study was conducted in a teaching hospital with 834 beds, nine ICUs, and roughly 152 ICU beds. To cover the ICUs, a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is tasked. The CNS’s practice is centered on providing care for patients and their families, assisting other healthcare professionals, and implementing change at the systemic level. The CNS at this hospital was tasked with delivering high-quality, economically viable care in this setting, and they started looking for programs to achieve this. The HOB protocol study began its development. Developing this process took more than nine months. Many felt the standard should be 45° since it is the angle employed in a reported randomized trial comparing HOB elevation and VAP, while some doctors agreed with a standard of HOB 30°. Compliance with the HOB elevation protocol eventually rose from the initial 30% to 70%. Additional implementation tactics were put in place using the hospital’s electronic medical record, which contributed to the success of this outcome. The nurse was instructed to record the patient’s HOB and any deviations from the norm when taking vital signs in the space provided on the vital sign sheet. The HOB protocol was made available in the electronic charting at the same time as a reference. The focus on compliance measurements and results is a crucial part of process transformation, however, it can take a significant amount of time (George & Tuite, 2008).
