CIS 4410 Advanced Industrial Commuting Internship Experience
Getting an internship with Advanced Industrial Commuting in my last year of school was one of the best things that happened to me. In this internship, I am getting the chance to put the knowledge I gained in school to a practical application of work.
My internship at AIC is a great opportunity for me because AIC as a company they manufacture servers and sell them, while some of the classes I enjoyed in school were directly related to what I am doing now, Like the IT infrastructure and telecommunication classes I took with Professor Chuck Bennet.
Also dealing with customers and being part of a team is a great way to apply and enhance what I learner with Professor Lois Hoyt at the MHR class she thought. Being at this internship, I got the opportunity to see how the theory of knowledge gets applied in work. It is like seeing your grandmother making a delicious pie from the ground up using simple ingredients and the most important part is the ability to taste the pie after it is done.
One of my favorite classes I got was the Telecommunication Class because in that class Professor Chuck made a requirement for every student to buy a pc if the student doesn’t have one. In that class, we got the chance to build a virtual server, build VPNs, connect multiple computers through a virtual network, and play Minecraft as a final project, while now at work we are doing the same thing but on a bigger scale.
In the second week of work, I got the chance to build the actual hardware of the server and then installing the software on it, test it to see if it has any errors, and then connecting it to another remote server which is located in a different state. Doing this gave me confidence in our education system and most important in the work that my Professor was asking us to do, even though at that time I was complaining that it was too much and unnecessary.
On the other hand, I also learn a lot about new hardware components and new ways of connecting electronic parts with software to create a smooth communication between the hardware and software, which will lead the server to provide the best performance possible. Those details I learned at work of how to work with servers, we did not go over it in school probably because I am in a unique industry or school education system try to focus on general concepts that will apply everywhere.
In IT infrastructure we were learning the basics simple ingredients like the one my grandma uses in making her pie, which in my case it was the basics of the IT world. But of course, it did not make much sense to me at that time, because when you get to learn the basics of thing of commuters is just like learning A B C D which it does not make anything useful as letters next to each other, or in other words, the big picture was not painted in my head yet.
For example, at work once I was asked to change the fans speed of the server, but at that moment I would not be successful if I did not understand and know how to convert hexadecimal to decimal, because I had to take the instructions of manufacturing which they were in hexadecimal and convert them to decimal in order for me to input the instruction code to the command line in DOS to effect the speed of the fans, which all goes back to the IT infrastructure class.
Lastly The workplace I am in consists of multiple teams divided into many departments, but the beauty of it is that you can’t tell the separation between the department just like the engine of the car, it has multiple separate parts, but it works seamlessly as a whole.
What helped me to be to fit in and understand the team dynamics, is the understanding I got in MHR class, of how organizations work, and different ways that team could be build up, which otherwise I might have struggled to be an effective member of the team. Also learning the etiquette and the concepts of how an employee presents the company in every interaction with customers, helped me to create more successful integrations with the customer and putting the EGO away while focusing on the bigger picture.
Being successful at work with my teammates, customs, and having the necessary skills to perform, all is gained from school. On the other hand, the only thing I wish as if the roadmap of the bachelor’s degree was more focused on the major just like when perusing a master’s degree.
At the end other my gratitude to the Professors and the work we did with them, I am happy that they assigned those books with the amount of work to us, which they had tremendous value. I believe knowledge is money and we had plenty of it at school, not only for this internship but this is something we will carry for life.
