TOPICS
- Information technology developments have rendered questions of employee rights (including the right to privacy) and the management of the employment relationship more complex. Prepare a report examining some of the most recent Canadian legal cases relevant to information technology use in an employment context. What are some approaches employers may take to manage these issues? Among the possible issues to consider are: employee use of computers at the workplace; social media and employee online activity; workplace policies on employee privacy and computer technology use; and, employer vicarious liability and employee use of IT.

- Shareholder concern with executive compensation is growing. Provide a report and your own analysis of some of the key developments and cases in the area of shareholder rights with respect to executive compensation practices in Canada and the connection to the broader question of adequate corporate oversight and governance.
- Choose a topic in Canadian constitutional law or human rights law and write a report on the present status of the law and related issues. Explore the pros and cons of any proposed legal changes and the likely impacts and results. Some topic examples are: a) the Constitution and the establishment of a national securities regulator; b) ongoing issues concerning the right to medically assisted death; c) options for and obstacles to Senate reform; d) the “me too” movement and developments in anti-harassment and human rights protections and e) legislating secularism and Quebec’s Bill 62. - Class actions in Canada have been growing at a steady pace. Explore one or two of the areas of the law that have benefitted from this approach to litigation (for example, product liability cases, environmental litigation, human rights protection, etc.) Briefly examine relevant cases and consider the reasons for, as well as any down side to, the use of class action for addressing these types of legal issues and disputes.
