Academic freedom generally refers to academic institutions, students, teachers, and public officials having the freedom to pursue knowledge as well as discuss it regardless of where it might lead without having to face any restrictions or unreasonable interference. Academic freedom at the minimum is the involvement of having the freedom to take part in different activities that involve knowledge, include having to choose a research focus, having to decide what to treat in a classroom, showing the findings of a research project to colleagues as well as publishing the findings of a research. Academic freedom ensures that both students and instructors can express their ideas in an academic institution without the interference of politics, religion, or any form of restriction. Still, academic freedom has limits.
In the United States, by the widely known “1940 Statement on Academic Freedom and Tenure” instructors and professors are required to be careful to avoid matters that might be controversial and do not relate to the subject at hand (Kraft, 2017). When they are in public and they speak or write, they have the right and freedom to express their opinions without having a fear of institutional censorship or discipline. Regardless, they should be clear and show restraint to show that they are not speaking for their facility. Academic freedom has limitations in practice.
In regards to the constitutional protection of freedom of speech, academic freedom goes beyond these freedom rights, which are protected by the First Amendment. Others include the right to determine the curriculum of a given classroom. In recent years, in court a ruling by the federal appeals the court to have new precedent, which will have limitations on the academic freedom of members of the faculty.
