The Curtain Rises Summary Essay Paper
I’m working on a art writing question and need support to help me learn.
Imagine you are living as a first-generation immigrant in
New York City, in 1895. A friend has told you about an exciting new activity they have seen; something that involves moving pictures. It is Edison’s Kinetoscope parlor, in midtown Manhattan.
You are living in 1895; therefore, you have never had radio, television, the internet, telephones (these were only for the very wealthy at this time), or many of the other technologies and forms of media and entertainment that we all take for granted now. The movie theater industry has notreally begun yet, and ‘animation’ as a filmmaking form doesn’t really exist yet either, outside of optical toys such as the simple thaumatrope and zoetrope.

Emile Reynaud is putting on performances of the Theatre Optique, but that only exists in France. Most of your leisurely time is spent reading books, newspapers, magazines, and seeing live musical performances or plays at the theater.
Your friend convinces you check out the mysterious ‘peep show’ boxes at the Kinetoscope parlor and you both scrape up a couple nickels to bring with you for this fascinating new experience.
Task: Write a 1-page informal journal entry outlining your imagined experience at the Kinetoscope parlor.
The Curtain Rises Summary Essay Paper
In your journal, write about all of your feelings and reactions to this experience, based on your life as someone
who has never yet seen movies or animated films before—for the most part, they simply don’t exist yet much otherwise.
What about it is mysterious, outrageous, entertaining, or magical to you? What are you curious or wondering about? Do
you understand what is happening and how it is happening, or not? Are you entertained or bored? Do you care? Do you think it’s a novelty and a passing fad, or is this something to tell your kids and grandkids about someday?
